iPad, Anything More Than a Big iPod?

The iPad, something of wonder according to Steve Jobs, but is it really? Here are my initial thoughts on it. First, it runs on the same OS as the iPhone and iPod Touch. It has all the same functions as an iPhone, minus the phone part. It does have a couple things going for it though. It has a special version of iWork that was made just for the iPad, so you can make documents, spreadsheets, and powerpoints. It also has the iBookshelf which adds the ebook reading feature somewhat similar to Amazon’s Kindle and B&N’s Nook though the books are generally $5 more than Amazon. Apple claims that the iPad is the link between the iPhone and the MacBook but it’s not really better than the iPhone. Yeah, it has a big screen which would be nice for movies and it plays music but the MacBook does all these things and more and it’s only slightly bigger. The iPad will come in a 3G version so you can the internet with you everywhere on a much bigger screen than the iPhone but the only problem is the iPad doesn’t have flash so many sites won’t work properly. The iPad doesn’t even have a webcam which would be great for Skype convos. As is I don’t think it’s worth the starting price of $499 for the 16GB wi-fi only version. Where I think it will shine is as a glorified ebook reader. Until they add a lot of updates such as an actual OS I don’t think it’s worth it.
